Many semi-trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. When the mass of the truck collides with a typical 4,000 pound automobile it is almost always, as you can imagine, the automobile that gets the short end of the stick in the accident. Unfortunately, serious truck crashes will often cause serious injuries or death to the victim. Given the serious injury potential of large commercial trucks the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require the commercial trucking company to carry a minimum of $750,000 in liability coverage for their truck and driver. This minimum coverage is mandatory for any commercial vehicle that weighs more than 10,000 pounds. However, most of the time coverage for these commercial vehicles will be 1 million if not more.
In addition, if the truck or trucking company is hauling hazardous material(s) then the Federal Motor Safety Regulations require a larger amount of insurance to be carried on the eighteen wheeler well above the 1 million dollar mark.
Given their potential liability, it is not uncommon for the insurance carrier for the trucking company to quickly hire investigators to respond to the accident scene within 24 hours. Many times, they do this to start their general process of shifting blame away from the negligent truck driver and/or trucking company and towards the accident victim.
